Li is Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, Guangzhou Medical University, China. He is also Vice-President of the Guangzhou Brain Hospital (also named Guangzhou Psychiatric Hospital), where he has worked for over 10 years. Dr. Li has held many academic positions in China, including: (1) Editorial Board Member, Chinese Journal of Psychiatry (2011- ); (2) Editorial Board Member, Chinese Journal of Nervous and Mental Diseases (2006-2013 ); (3) Guest editor, Journal of Psychiatry(2011- ); (4) Council Member, China Association for Mental Health (2006-2010); (5) President, Guangzhou Psychiatric Association (2004- ). He has made significant contributions to the field of cultural psychiatry in China. He is vice-director of the cultural psychiatry section in the Chinese Society of Psychiatry (CSP). He has published two books in Chinese, “Culture and Psychiatry”(Huaxia Publishing House, 2011) and “Art and Psychiatry” (Huaxia Publishing House, 2015 ). They are pioneering works in China. His medical mission is “building a bridge between bio-psychiatry and humanism”.

Culture impacts mental illness so that culturally relevant care is needed for patients of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. From a social point of view, there has been rapid social and cultural change, as well as migration within and between nations. Societies are becoming multi-ethnic and poly-cultural in nature worldwide. From a clinical perspective, there is a need to improve cultural competence to provide proper psychiatric care of each patient, considering the ethnic/race/cultural background, irregardless of minority or majority status.
